A few questions about hair straightening?

Okay, I'm 15 and I got a hair straightener about a year and a half ago and I've been using it occasionally since then, but I use it now more than ever. Today I was getting my hair cut and the lady who cut my hair was saying that my hair will burn off if I don't use a heat protectant spray, because I haven't been using spray like that. Won't your hair be fine if you just set the heat lower on your straightener? I have the Conair Infiniti Hair Designer which helps a lot in drying my hair really quickly, do I need spray for that as well?

oh thats very very bad!

those straighteners that take your hair from wet to straight are even worse for your hair than regular straightening, i learned that the hard way =/

always use hear protector spray!

Heat is heat. Its gonna damage your hair which is why the heat protectant is very important when you're applying ANY kind of heat to your hair.

So no setting the heat lower isnt going to help, and using protectant when blow drying is also a good idea.

its always a good idea to use a spray (just so your hair doesn't fry) even when you blow dry. i use a spray about 3 times a week and my hair is healthier than ever. if you use it everyday your hair will start to look greasy. try V05 heat protector. its pricey but it works :)

No, you don't need the spray. The hair stylist just says that so that you will buy some from them. It just an old trick to make sales. Half the stuff stylists tell me i need, I don't need, but my mom believes them, poor soul lol.

It's wise to make sure your hair is conditioned properly and you should try to avoid heat as much as you can without sacrificing style. Your hair is fragile and more brittle now and you must take care of it. You should use some kind of heat protectant when straightening, curling etc. I let my hair air dry so I don't have to put all that heat on it. Then I staighten it later. I don't straighten it every day cuz I don't want to look the same every day.

oh for sure use a spray. I use CHI thermal guard spray for me and my 7 yr old daughter and it does make a difference. As stated above, you should not use a flat iron on anything but already dry hair. Ideally if you are going to use a flat iron you should let the hair dry naturally. Wash it at night, and then flat iron with a protective spray the next morning, lessening the amount of heat used.

I am not a hairstylist, I am just a mom with good hair so take my advice for what it's worth.

if you dont want your hair to burn...yes i use jlife heat sheild and it works wonderful...

Sorry to tell you, but straightening your hair with a flat iron, blowdrying your hair on a daily basis, using a curling iron, etc. will all damage your hair no matter what you put on it to "protect it". Wavy or curly hair is already delicate. The hair follicle is more susceptible to damage, the tightest curls being the most delicate.

You can try to protect your hair with products, but realistically any use of direct heat on your hair on a daily basis is a daily dose of damage. It is your personal choice, but you should be able to evaluate your hair's health.

If you are only straightening your hair only occasionally, you can experiment with different products that you can apply before or after straightening. I have used this Sebastian product only because I was given a free sample. It seemed to help with the straightening process.
