I have thick curly hair, and i have heard conflicting things about Japanese hair straightening. I know there is the traditional kind, like in Queens, NY, by someone in an Asian salon, and then there are newer forms that are supposed to be better for your hair. I need somone to tell me which kind to get, if either, and I want people to answer only if they have gotten it done themselves, or if they know somone close to them that got it done. Also, what salon do you recommend? I live on Long Island, NY.

yes if you needed a change to your curly hair, yes it's probably the only thing you could do. asian's hair styling methods probably only originate from korea and japan but i have used to japan one which is good. but before you do it, make sure your stylist is using japanese brand (because there are alot of imitate products from china as far as im concerned). if it was very cheap, it's probably a fake one. it costs about AUD200 to AUD300 for a normal shoulder length hair.
generally it will last for a year, that's when your hair would have grown by about 10cm and you will reconsider whether to re-do it again. my hair was thick and curly (loL my dad said i looked like a male lion - you get the idea) but after i got it done everybody said the money was well spent! it has been about 5 years since i first did it and i have had it done 3 times now (only because it was too expensive). my back hair is still straight, smooth and shinier than ever! front hair is rather messy due to new hair though... i think also because i tend to curl it behind my ears.
Oh it is vitally important that you do not do it more than once in a year. When you are going it a second time, tell your stylist when you last did it so they can adjust the strength of the solution to suit your hair. note that though, you shouldnt do it if your hair is already damaged say by too much of highlight or colouring.
anyway, yeah the japanese straightening might do wonder to your hair. it did to mine!

i've never heard of japanese hair straightenning, but i had extremely thick and curley hair and i got it chemically straightenned and it worked so well that i don't even have to use a straightenner to keep it straight and it lasts until your hair grows out. it also isn't damaging and didn't cost much at the place i got it done, but that's in indiana so ya...

Well, since you have curly hair, after a few months, your hair will grow around 2inches of new hair and it will be curly. I don't think Japanese hair straightening is recomended for naturally curly hair(not unless if you only want straight hair for a few months). It does make your hair straight but it last longer if you have asian hair or slightly wavy hair.

it is a very HARSH chemical relaxer. I've had mixed reviews...some love it and some were VERY unhappy. I wouldn't do it if you color your hair a lot because your hair might break off. Sorry I don't know any salons in Long Island.

Well first off...I've never had my hair straightened before, so I can't give you MY perspective. Secondly, I live in Colorado, no where near (and also quite different culturally) New York. BUT my entire family works with the beauty industry...hair, skin, make up, the works...we actually own two leading companies currently, and I can tell you that the Japanese are very advanced compared to Americans when it comes to fashion, so yes, I believe that for your hair, it would be fine. Look up some local salons...it won't be cheap if you want it done right. If the price is low, then don't go! Some people just don't quite know what they're doing...you want some place with a good reputation....some place that's not really "off the beaten path." But trust me honey...in New York that ain't gonna be hard to find.
Sorry to be so incredibly vague with you; I hope I helped a little.

i had my hair straightened a year and a half ago. it looked amazing for 6 months, then nice for 3 more. now it is so damaged, i sometimes think about chopping the whole thing off. it looks great short term, but your hair will suffer in the long run. i have to just wait for the whole thing to grow out before i can hope for any shine to return.
